Bankstown is a commercial and residential suburb located 16 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. The suburb is home to a thriving business district clustered around Bankstown railway station, as well as its own airport. Bankstown is found between Greenacre to the north and Revesby to the south.
Prior to European settlement, Bankstown was covered by Turpentine ironbark forest. Its traditional owners are the Bediagal people. A pioneer colony was established in the area as early as 1795 and was named Bank`s Town after Sir Joseph Banks, a botanist who first travelled to Australia with Captain James Cook in 1770. World War II saw Bankstown develop as an industrial centre and following the war; an influx of migrants dramatically increased the suburb`s population.
Bankstown`s commercial business district is found in the centre of the suburb, radiating around Bankstown train station. Bankstown Plaza and Bankstown Central are prominent features of the suburb`s CBD. Bankstown Airport, found further west, caters to fixed-wing and helicopter schools, as well as charter flights, aviation businesses and private aircraft.
