Austral is a large residential suburb located 42 kilometres southwest of Sydney's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Liverpool. Found between Cecil Park to the north and Leppington to the south, Austral is bounded by Kemps Creek to the west and a Sydney Water supply channel to the east. Austral is not far from the site of Western Sydney Airport, due to open in 2026.

History
The area that constitutes Austral today was originally a parcel of land in the suburb of West Hoxton. Purchased by the Austral Banking and Land Propriety, the second public school in the Hoxton Park area was subsequently named Austral Public School in 1891. The school's name became synonymous with the surrounding area and the suburb was formally gazetted as Austral in 1972.

Found on the rim of Sydney's more high-density residential suburbs, Austral enjoys proximity to semi-rural peripheral districts. The suburb is serviced by IGA supermarkets on Edmondson Avenue, not far from Austral Bowling Club. Austral's most prominent public green space is WV Scott Memorial Park.
