Camden is an outer residential suburb located 65 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district. A historic town of Sydney; the suburb is largely surrounded by semi-rural districts. Camden enjoys proximity to the Southern Highlands, Wollongong and a number of national parks. The suburb is found between Cobbitty and Kirkham to the north and Camden South to the south.
The traditional owners of the area that makes up Camden today are the Gandangara people of the Southern Highlands. European explorers first visited the Camden area in 1795 and John Macarthur was granted the first significant landholding in 1805, naming it Camden Park. Camden Town was established in 1840. In recent decades the town has somewhat morphed into an outer suburb of Sydney, but still retains a semi-rural atmosphere.
A number of buildings in Camden are heritage listed including Camden Post Office, Camden Park House and Garden, Camden Park Estate and Belgenny Farm, Nant Gwylan and Garden, Macquarie Grove and St John`s Anglican Church. The Nepean River borders Camden to the north and the east, and Camden Airport is found to the suburb`s northwest.
