Campbelltown is an outer suburb and town located 53 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district. On the register of the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales, Campbelltown is regarded as one of only four cities within Sydney`s metropolitan area. The suburb enjoys proximity to the Royal National Park and the Southern Highlands, and is found between Blair Athol to the north and Glen Alpine to the south.
The traditional owners of the land that makes up Campbelltown today are the Tharawal People. European settlers first established landholdings in the area in 1805. A township was developed from 1831 and in 1858 Campbelltown became serviced by the southern rail line. In the early 1960s, the New South Wales Planning Authority designated the town as a satellite city. Rapid population growth and residential development followed, resulting in the semi-rural suburban atmosphere that Campbelltown enjoys today.
Campbelltown`s main commercial area is concentrated around Queen Street, adjacent to Campbelltown railway station. Western Sydney University Village Campbelltown is located in the suburb`s west. As a historical township of Sydney, a number of heritage-listed sites stand in Campbelltown including Glenalvon House, Warbys Barn and Stables, and Richmond Villa.
