Chipping Norton is a residential and recreational suburb located 27 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the Greater Western Sydney region. The meandering Georges River surrounds Chipping Norton on three sides, affording the suburb a pleasant waterside atmosphere. Chipping Norton is situated between Warwick Farm and Lansvale to the north and Milperra and Moorebank to the south.
The traditional custodians of the area that makes up Chipping Norton today are the Tharawal people and the Darug people. Following European settlement, the suburb was largely an agricultural area up until the mid 20th century. The suburb`s rich riverside soil was mined for a number of decades, detrimentally eroding the area`s riverbanks. In 1977, the Chipping Norton Lakes Authority was established to rejuvenate the area into parkland, as it exists today. Chipping Norton Lake, an artificial lake and part of the Georges River, was created in 1980.
Almost all of Chipping Norton`s extensive riverfront is dedicated to parkland, the likes of which include South Park, Angle Park, Black Muscat Park, Heron Park and more. Grand Flaneur Beach is found in the suburb`s north, on Chipping Norton Lake, adjacent to `The Homestead` - a heritage-listed residence built in the 1880s.
