Fairfield is a commercial and residential suburb located 23 kilometres west of Sydney`s central business district. The suburb is the administrative centre of the local government area of the Fairfield City Council. A vibrant, multicultural suburb, Fairfield is home to a thriving commercial district. The suburb is situated between Smithfield to the north and Canley Vale to the south.
The traditional owners of the area that makes up Fairfield today are the Aboriginal people from the Cabrogal-Gandangara tribe. European settlement took place in the early 1800s, with `Fairfield House` being erected in the suburb in the 1860s. Fairfield railway station opened in 1856 and today features the oldest surviving railway building in New South Wales. Formerly an agricultural and timber producing district, Fairfield developed into a residential suburb following WWII.
The suburb`s bustling commercial district is found in its centre, adjacent to Fairfield Station, and is home to a number of multicultural restaurants and food stores. Fairfield Park and Fairfield Adventure Park are located in the suburb`s southeast, near the banks of Orphan School Creek. A number of open green spaces are found along Prospect Creek, which acts as Fairfield`s natural northeastern border.
