Liverpool is a commercial and residential suburb located 27 kilometres southwest of Sydney's central business district. The suburb is a commercial hub and is the administrative seat of the local government area of the City of Liverpool. Liverpool is situated between Cabramatta to the north and Casula to the south. Founded in 1810, Liverpool is one of Australia's oldest urban settlements.
Following European settlement, Liverpool was established in 1810 as an agricultural centre by Governor Lachlan Macquarie. The district was named after the English city of Liverpool, as well as Robert Banks Jenkinson, Earl of Liverpool and the Secretary of State for the Colonies. Its strategic position on the Georges River, as well as on the Sydney to Melbourne railway line, saw Liverpool become a major transportation and agricultural centre in the late 1850s. Up until the 1950s, Liverpool was an agricultural satellite town of Sydney. It gradually transformed into an outer suburb of metropolitan Sydney over the following decades as Sydney sprawled in size and population.
Liverpool's bustling central business district is found in the suburb's northeast, adjacent to the Georges River and Liverpool train station. Liverpool's CBD has a Hoddle Grid layout, similar to that of Melbourne, with a number of laneways and arcades found off of its main streets.
