Padstow is a residential suburb located 22 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, on the eastern edge of the Greater Western Sydney region. The suburb sits on Salt Pan Creek (a stream that feeds into the Georges River) and is found between Bankstown to the north and Padstow Heights to the south. Mostly a residential area, Padstow also features a light industrial precinct within its folds.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Padstow today was primarily developed for timber getting and farming. A series of early land grants originally made up the Padstow Park Estate, named after the town of Padstow in Cornwall, England. Padstow Park railway station opened in 1931, which led to residential development in the area, particularly after WWII. The suburb`s name was changed to Padstow in 1939.
Padstow`s main shopping precinct is found in the suburb`s centre, radiating around Padstow Station. Salt Pan Creek forms the suburb`s natural southeastern border with Riverwood and Peakhurst. A number of streets in Padstow have Egyptian and outer space themed names, the most notable being Cairo Avenue, Pyramid Avenue, Sphinx Avenue, Uranus Road, Mars Street and Neptune Street.
