Panania is a residential suburb located 23 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the South Western Sydney region. A small portion of the suburb sits on the banks of the Georges River. Panania forms part of the local government area of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown and is situated between Milperra to the north and Picnic Point to the south.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Panania today and the broader East Hills district was a rural portion of Sydney used largely for poultry and horticulture. Panania is an Aboriginal word meaning "sun rising in the east and shining on the hills". Panania railway station opened in 1931. From then, and particularly after WWII, the suburb gradually developed into a residential area.
Panania`s most notable shopping strip is found in the centre of the suburb, on either side of Panania train station. The suburb is largely made up of residential streets, but its northwestern portion comprises a series of parks and green spaces including Killara Reserve, Marco Reserve and Kelso Park North. Kelso Beach Reserve is found in Panania`s west, on the banks of the Georges River.
