Picnic Point is a residential riverside suburb located 23 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the South Western Sydney region. The suburb enjoys an extensive waterfront on the Georges River and forms part of the local government area of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. Picnic Point is situated between Panania to the north and Menai to the south.
Formerly a part of East Hills, Picnic Point was gazetted as its own suburb in 1975, with new boundaries formed in 1994. The suburb is named after its southwestern peninsula that juts out into the meandering Georges River. During WWII, Picnic Point National Park was the site of a RAAF receiving station and operations bunker. The site operates today as an electricity sub station.
Picnic Point enjoys a number of riverside green spaces, and the majority of the suburb`s southern portion is designated as national parkland. Lambeth Reserve, Picnic Point Reserve, Alan Ashton Foreshore Reserve and Fitzpatrick Park are all found on the banks of the Georges River. Yeramba Lagoon is situated in the suburb`s south and is surrounded by a number of bushland walking tracks.
