Prestons is a residential and light industrial suburb located 37 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Liverpool. Many Sydney suburbs derive their names from their earliest European settlers. Prestons, on the other hand, is named after a local Irish family who ran a small post office in the district in the 1910s. The Preston family were well known for their positive contributions to the local community, donating food and household items to those in need. In 1972 the suburb was gazetted as Prestons in their honour.
